Indoor Air Quality & Assessment
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the content of interior air that could affect health and comfort of building occupants. IAQ may be compromised by microbial contaminants (mold, bacteria), chemicals (such as carbon monoxide or radon), allergens, or any mass or energy stressor that can induce health effects. Recent findings have demonstrated that indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air, albeit with different pollutants. In fact, indoor air is often a greater health hazard than the corresponding outdoor setting. Ventilation to dilute contaminants, filtration and source control are the primary methods for improving indoor air quality in most buildings.
Abatement Restoration Specialists can provide assessment and experienced response for both proactive and incident-based services:
- We have worked with numerous clients to provide routine or planned IAQ surveys designed to characterize indoor environmental conditions related to microbial, chemical and physical (comfort) parameters in the building environment. This information can then be compared to accepted industry guidelines and standards. Where appropriate, we can provide detailed work plans to remediate identified IAQ issues, either directly or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Our personnel have experience in providing incident response to IAQ emergencies ranging from critical employee complaints, chemical releases in airports and bioterrorism response to construction failures, weather related disasters and fires.
Our technical specialists have provided IAQ expertise to facility managers, HVAC professionals, engineers, major construction companies and government agencies for over 20 years. We routinely participate in college level teaching and training classes on IAQ and microbial contamination. We maintain active membership in professional societies and trade associations related to the engineering, environmental, and HVAC professions.
